How LED Technology & LED Lighting Saves Money

How LED Technology & LED Lighting Saves Money

LED stands for light-emitting diode. This technology is not new, but it is revolutionizing the way we live, work, and play. LEDs are special because they create light instantly while producing very little heat and consuming a fraction of the electricity of a standard light bulb.

LED Replacement Light Bulbs

These bulbs consume about 13-15% the electricity of a standard light bulb, and about half as much as a CFL. While standard bulbs last hundreds of hours, and CFLs last thousands, the lifespan of an LED is usually listed in the tens of thousands of hours. At this time, the cost of LED lights is significantly more than other types of lights, but it is rapidly declining. Because of this, it only makes sense to replace lights that are on all day or bulbs that are very difficult to replace to save energy at home.
  • Instantly on. There is no warm up period like CFLs.
  • Amazing Efficiency. There is no other technology that produces light with less electricity. This makes LEDs perfect for applications where the light is on all the time.
  • Incredible Longevity. These lights last for years. They should provide light for 25-30 years of normal use. If you have a light bulb in a spot that is almost impossible to reach, an LED may be a permanent solution.

How Much Can You Save With LED's?

LED bulbs are still more expensive than their incandescent equivalents but they are far cheaper to run. How much exactly are we talking about?

There’s considerable variation in the price and performance of all bulb types but the below figures are typical:

  • A 100-watt incandescent bulb costs around $0.75, costs 1.0c per hour to run, and lasts for around 1,000 hours.
  • A 23-watt CFL bulb produces around the same amount of light, but costs around $3, costs 0.23c per hour to run, and lasts for 8,000 hours.
  • A 14-watt LED bulb costs $6, costs 0.14c per hour to run, and lasts for 25,000 hours.

Although the LED bulb costs around eight times as much, it lasts 20–25 times longer and the lower running costs add up over time.
